What’s GPON

Table of Contents

1. What’s GPON?

GPON means  Gigabit Passive Ethernet . Passive Optical Network (PON) is a system that transmits signals over fiber optic cabling to homes or businesses (FTTx) through a point-to-multipoint architecture. It allows users to access video, audio, internet data, etc. There are many different standards for PON, and GPON is one of them. It was first proposed by FSAN and completed in 2004.

Key Features:

①The  uplink and downlink rates are 1.2Gbps and 2.4Gbps respectively   .

② Protect the security and privacy of user data through encryption  .

③ Triple-play service:   VoIP, data and IPTV

④ Long distance coverage up to 20 kilometers.

2.How does GPON work?

GPON FTTH access network consists of optical line terminal (OLT), optical splitter and optical network terminal (ONT). GPON can  transmit Ethernet, TDM (time division multiplexing) and ATM traffic . OLT is responsible for converting optical signals into electrical signals and providing them to the core Ethernet switch. Optical splitter is used to separate the power of the signal. ONT is deployed at the customer premises. It will receive the signal sent from the optical splitter or send the signal back to OLT.

3. Why choose GPON network?

GPON is a point-to-multipoint technology, not a point-to-point technology, which is superior to point-to-point Ethernet connections. This feature reduces costs. As technology develops, FTTx is the best choice to meet user needs. Compared with copper wires, it has less interference and is safer. As for  the difference between GPON and EPON , GPON is a better choice for those who care more about  bandwidth, QoS, and security .

4. Application of GPON

According to the requirements of FTTx and GPON network standards, V-SOL has developed a series of GPON routers including  GPON ONU/ONT  and  GPON OLT . There are many types of GPON equipment, providing WiFi, CATV, VOIP and other services for different needs and scenarios.
